How’s this for camp oven tucker!
Back nearly 30 years ago, I was camping at Emu Park near Rockhampton in central Queensland. While there, I came across another camper roasting a chicken in a Bedourie camp oven beside a barbecue. I watched as she levelled coals and then put more on top of the oven. I was completely fascinated.
We got talking and she showed me a book called Outback Cooking in a Camp Oven by Jack and Reg Absalom. I spent the next two days pouring over this book and knew there and then that I just had to get me a Bedourie camp oven. I did as soon as I returned from the trip.
Needless to say that since that time I have embarked on a lifetime of cooking in a Bedourie camp oven. I have travelled a lot around Queensland, camping in national parks and state forests, and I have delivered up many a fine camp oven meal cooked on the coals.
When out camping I was amazed at the number of people who didn’t know that much about camp oven cooking and I found it a great pleasure talking to and explaining to people how to use a camp oven.
