Take the Ghan
The
red desert of central Australia is said to be
virtually uninhabited but there’s a village
of 300 or so people who could probably be called
modern nomads roaming through every couple of days.
Despite the inhospitable
surroundings, the village has restaurants complete
with chefs, airconditioned accommodation, bars and
comfortable beds.
Actually it is a train, the
new Ghan, which runs from Adelaide to Darwin.
Rather than toil up the Stuart Highway it is now
possible to drive your vehicle onto the train in
Adelaide and unload it in Alice Springs or Darwin
after a luxurious break away from the steering
wheel.
